Ways for Kids to Stay Active in Winter

As winter is quickly approaching, kids' activities typically shift inside.  Unfortunately most activities and sports have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19 cases rising.  For many children, these activities provide a much needed physical outlet as well as socialization for children.  With their activities shut down, kids may get a little restless, especially after spending school time in front of the computer.  Here are some socially distant ideas to help kids stay active this winter:

  1. Go Outside - While we normally associate outside activities with the warmer months, getting outside in any weather is great for children.  Just make sure to bundle up!  The fresh air combined with more room to move around makes for a great way to burn off some of their energy.  Being outside also provides us with Vitamin D.

  2. Dance - Dancing is a great way to get moving and be active.  Dancing is fun so you do not always notice how much exercise you are doing.

  3. Play Games - Play games that require movement and engaging your body.  Games like Twister, musical chairs or Simon Says can be a great way to help children burn energy inside while still having fun.

  4. Active Play - Play cars or dolls, but utilize the entire inside space.  Race their cars around the kitchen or do laps around the bedrooms with the dolls in their strollers.  Create a fort with couch cushions they can jump on, or have a pillow fight.  Engaging children’s imagination and bodies will use their mental and physical energy.

  5. Video Games - Try active video games.  Most of the major systems have an active version (i.e. Xbox 360 Kinect or the Playstation Move).  Children who love video games can enjoy gaming while also burning some energy and being active.

  6. YouTube - Find an exercise video on YouTube.  There are a ton of videos aimed at children in a variety of activities.  Pick one that the child is interested in from Yoga to cardio to strength building exercises.  If you have time, join them! It is a great way to keep yourself moving as well, while showing your child that being active is important at any age.

Remember, just because it is getting colder and activities are shut down, it doesn’t mean that there are not ways to help children remain active and burn some energy!
