The Importance of Self-Care
Self-Care is defined as, “a deliberate practice of taking action to preserve our own mental, emotional, and physical health.” This may sound simple, but it’s something we often overlook. Good self-care is key to improving mood, reducing anxiety and enhancing relationships with ourselves and others.
Eight types of self-care include: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, personal, space, financial and work.
Practicing self-care is important for both children and adults and can look different to each person. Some general self-care examples include: creating a “no” list (not checking emails after work hours), eating a balanced diet, getting 7-8 hours of sleep, exercising (this increases serotonin levels, leading to improved mood and energy), following up with medical care, using relaxation exercises/practicing meditation, spending time with loved ones, doing at least one relaxing activity per day; and lastly, look for opportunities to laugh!
It is imperative to remember that self-care is NOT selfish. Clinical psychologist Agnes Wainman states, “self-care is something that refuels us, rather than takes from us.” We must help ourselves before we can help others.
